Free Worm Workshops In July

Ko’olau Farmers, in partnership with Windward Zero Waste Schools, will offer three one-hour Worm Workshops.  The first is scheduled for Saturday, July 13, at the Ko’olau Farmers Honolulu location at 1935 S. Beretania Street.  Windward workshops will take place on Saturday, July 20, at Ko’olau Farmers Kaneohe location, and on Saturday, July 27, at Ko’olau Farmers Kailua location.  All workshop sessions start at 10 am and are FREE.

The workshop will cover worm bin basics, care, feeding, and harvesting.   A unique, popular home system called the Worm HangOut will be featured and is available at a special workshop-day pricing. Worms will be sold starting at 1/4 pound for $40.  All worm sales benefit Kailua’s Zero Waste schools. Click here to see the flier.

All that food also created a lot of baby worms, and students are eager to share their surplus worm stock with the community.  Composting with worms at home reduces waste and nourishes gardens and lawns without chemicals. Keeping a household colony of worms is fun, easy, and rewarding.

The hands-on sessions will be conducted by Mindy Jaffe, Oahu’s leading vermiculturist and coordinator of the Windward Zero Waste School Hui.  Vermicomposting is an important component of the Resource Recovery program at Ka’ohao, Ka’elepulu, Kainalu Elementary Schools as well as Kailua Intermediate, where campus worm colonies this past school year collectively processed over six tons of cafeteria kitchen waste into a rich organic fertilizer…  garbage to gold!
