Do you long to make a difference in this world? Do you want to disrupt the path of environmental degradation and lead the way to environmental restoration? Do you seek to spend your time outdoors doing skilled, rewarding physical work that produces measurable results you can see every day?
Join us and become a Resource Recovery Specialist (RRS). There is increasing demand for knowledgeable, experienced, certified practitioners who can successfully design, implement, and manage Zero Waste operations on Hawaii public school campuses.
Zero Waste is a philosophy and practice that maintains that there is no waste in nature – all discarded materials are valuable resources that can be recovered and reused. In the school context, professional Resource Recovery Specialists collect and sort all food, paper, cardboard, and green waste generated on campus and process it on site. As a RRS Apprentice, you will develop proficiency in key biological technologies including thermal, worm and and green waste composting, performing daily maintenance and management duties in all aspects of the operation. We also lead student work sessions and present fun, relevant academic units by request.
Kaʻōhao Elementary Public Charter School initiated Hawaii’s first Zero Waste program in 2014. Kaʻelepulu Elementary adopted the program in 2016, followed by Kainalu Elementary in 2017, and Enchanted Lake Elementary and Kailua Intermediate Schools in 2018. The five schools joined forces as the Windward Zero Waste School Hui. Our objective is to build a skilled, capable workforce to fill upcoming RRS positions.
