What is Compost Club?

If you subscribe to our Windward Zero Waste School Hui Newsletter, you will be automatically notified whenever we schedule a Compost Club harvest.

Participation in Compost Club provides an intimate, hands-on experience with the rich, dark compost – high in nutrients and microbial life – created from cafeteria food waste on campus every day through safe, natural thermal composting technology. When the raw material is fully processed, it’s time to harvest this absolutely glorious soil amendment and YOU are invited to lend a hand! Harvests are scheduled on Saturday mornings at 10:30am approximately every six weeks during the school year.

Location is nearly always at Kainalu Elementary School in Kailua. Expect to grind away for only one hour – many hands make light work! Compost harvesting is social, therapeutic, and invigorating.

Membership Dues & Requirements

To become a new Compost Club member, simply RSVP to the announced harvest you plan to attend and show up on the scheduled day and time. Your membership dues are $30 for two bucketfuls of compost and one hour of volunteer harvesting. After your first two-bucket purchase and one-hour session of harvesting, you become a Compost Club Member for Life and enjoy the benefits described below.

Benefits of Compost Club Membership

As a Compost Club member, you have the privilege to purchase compost at every harvest you attend, rather than wait for the semi-annual open-to-the-public Compost Sales. The cost of compost is $15 per 5-gallon bucketful (one cubic foot).

Many Compost Clubbers enjoy the down-in-the-dirt fun and camaraderie of harvesting so much that they want to help out every time. After your initial join-up volunteer session, you will get ONE point each time you come to volunteer to harvest. When you accrue THREE points, you earn a FREE bucket of compost!

Join the Compost Club today for fun, friendship, and superlative gardens, potted plants, landscaping and lawns. All proceeds from compost sales benefit the participating schools of the Windward Zero Waste School Hui.
