Compost Harvest, Saturday, 9/15

Aloha Compost Club Members,

The SEPTEMBER COMPOST HARVEST will be held this Saturday, Sept. 15, starting promptly at 10:30 am at Kainalu Elementary School in Kailua.  We will be done by 11:30 so you can get on with your day.  As always, guests are welcome to join in the fun.

Please enter through the double gate directly off Kainalu Drive and drive on the lawn right up to the site.

EVERY MORSEL of the compost harvested by you guys and students over the last few months has been put to use – we are completely out!  Kainalu and Ka’elepulu have expanded their garden beds, and Ka’ohao has a 1/16th acre farm that was just planted in corn.  We are supplying one of our new schools, Kailua Intermediate (KIS), with 24 boxes for their beds as well, supplied by Ka’elepulu.  One of the advantages of being in the Windward Zero Waste School Hui is that you can “borrow” compost from another school that has surplus and pay it back when you have extra.  KIS won’t begin to harvest their piles until next September, but they will yield plenty once they get started.  All the school gardens should be spectacular this season!  Consider the money (that is, taxpayer money) these schools are saving by composting their food waste!

We still have a wee bit of vermicast left.  Let me know if you want some and I’ll bring your order to the harvest.

Suggested attire: gardening clothes.  Closed-toe shoes are a must, and do bring gloves if you have them.  We have plenty of small-sized gloves.

As a Compost Club member, you can redeem your share(s) at this time – two buckets per share – in exchange for your hour of harvesting.  Or you can hold on to your shares and just volunteer to earn a point. Three points gets you a free bucket of compost at any subsequent harvest.

Whether you help to harvest this Saturday or not, as a Compost Club member, you can purchase compost @ $10 per bucket at any harvest throughout the year.  Bring your own 5-gallon bucket or other container.  We can usually provide a bucket if you don’t have one.

PLEASE RSVP IF YOU PLAN TO JOIN US THIS SATURDAY.

Send RSVP to <mindy@waikikiworm.net>

Mahalo!
