Compost Club on Tour, 6/17/23
Aloha Compost Club Members and Guests,
Last Harvest Before Upcoming Compost Sale
Saturday, June 17, 2023
Kaʻohao School, Lanikai
10:30-11:30am
Compost Club members and guests, we have just two more piles to harvest, and a beautiful big batch of vermicast to screen. We will convene at Ka’ohao School in Lanikai. Usually the 6th graders do all the harvesting and screening at Ka’ohao, but with a zillion activities going on at the end of the school year, they ran out of time. We owe Ka’ohao a big favor, so let’s help them out!
As you may know – sadly – on February 2nd the DOE shut down composting operations at Kainalu Elementary School, home base of Compost Club. Prohibited from managing our piles, we were horrified at the loss of valuable, rich soil amendment and the revenue it brings to the school as 32 piles progressively dried out in the hot wind and sun.
On May 3rd, an emergency intervention of Compost Clubbers managed to harvest eight piles of finished compost while a hired front loader/dump truck operator dug up and relocated 24 unfinished piles to Ka’ohao School, where they generously offered space. It was a remarkable rescue effort of man/woman and machine! Our deepest gratitude to all who participated.
The massive lump of dried, half-finished material has since bin rebuilt into respectable compost piles that are undergoing intensive rehabilitation at Ka’ohao. Come see for yourself!
Head to Kailua Beach Park, pass Buzz’s Steak House, make a right at the 4-way stop, and follow the signage. Come through the gate, go straight back past the dumpsters and down the sand road until you see us.
As always at any Compost Club harvest session, you can purchase all the compost you need and redeem any accumulated volunteer hours for a FREE bucketful. Bring your own containers – buckets, bags, boxes, etc.
See you Saturday at Ka’ohao School!
Mahalo!
