Compost Harvest, Saturday, 1/18

This rainy weather will not last forever! Sunny skies ahead!
The JANUARY COMPOST HARVEST will be held this Saturday, January 18, starting promptly at 10:30 am at Kainalu Elementary School in Kailua. This will be our final Kainalu harvest prior to the Compost Sale coming up fast on January 25. We have a mountain of compost with the addition of Enchanted Lake and KIS now harvesting during their 2nd year in the Zero Waste School program. Total yield for 2019 was over 50 cubic yards!!!
We’re a little behind at Kainalu due to earlier Compost Club cancellations, so – if we get a good turnout – we’ll try and knock out three piles. It may take a bit longer than our usual one hour, but you can do as much as you like and take off whenever.
Keep in mind that this is your BIG CHANCE to beat the Compost Sale rush and purchase your compost early. You can choose from the more refined material that’s been sitting around curing for months, or the more crunchy just-outta-the-pile stuff, if that is your preference. Compost Sale customers get a general blend of both.
Enter the back gate off Kainalu Drive – you’ll see a sign. We’ll open up at 10:00 am.
To become a Compost Club member, all you have to do is spend one hour volunteering at any 3rd-Saturday harvest plus purchase $20 worth of compost (two 5-gallon buckets), which you can carry away with you that day or pre-pay for a later pick-up. You’ll be included on the e-mail blast for future scheduled harvests and other events.
The primary benefit of Compost Club membership is the privilege to purchase compost at $10 per bucketful at any monthly harvest – rather than wait for the public sales in January and June – whether you volunteer that day or not.
In addition, for every hour you volunteer at a harvest you earn a point, and three points get you a bucket of compost for FREE.
The third great benefit is the fun and camaraderie at every harvest – it’s easy and satisfying!
Suggested attire: gardening clothes. Closed-toe shoes are a must and do bring gloves if you have them. We have plenty of small-sized gloves.
